How CA Glue is Used for Coral Fragging

How CA Glue is Used for Coral Fragging

It is not in dispute that CA glue is a strong adhesive for fragging corals, this is due to various inherent strengths. But while fragging itself might be frightening to newcomers it is also important to realize that using CA glue, or indeed glue in general, is probably the easiest part to it, in this article we’ll take you through just what fragging is and just how CA glue fits in to it.

Where Does CA Glue Come in and How to Use it?

CA glue and coral fragging have a relationship. This is best exemplified during the mounting phase where the coral fragments are placed all over the tank. During this phase, it is important to remember that though they are able to withstand fragging, coral is still very fragile. Therefore CA glue is the best option to use in your reef aquarium because you can use it to instantly mount the fragments without having to take them from the water.

This is due to the amphibious drying ability of the CA glue, able to form an instant bond in and out of water. In addition, the fact that Cyanoacrylate glue is nontoxic is great for both your coral and for the fish that may eventually populate your tank. Not to mention the fact that CA glue is exceptionally strong, giving your future colonies a solid base.

Now that that we’ve gone over the advantages and properties of CA glue there are few steps to using it on the coral in your reef tank when fragging. The first is to clean any surfaces that you may be mounting your fragments on as to best give your glue a bonding platform. The second is to add a small amount of glue to both the coral and the surface it will be going on to. Some brands may be a bottle that you squish while others may be a brush.

By applying glue to both surfaces this will help to create the strongest bond. You must make sure though that it is a CA glue gel as otherwise the liquid glue will mix with the water. An important note since, as we stated, you should only ever keep the coral and glue in the water of the aquarium.

Why Use a Glue During Fragging?

Using an adhesive during fragging helps to not only order where your corals go but also gives your colonies a place of support. This is why the inherent strength of the instant glue is so important. More toxic or longer drying glues will lead to times where coral are not in their proper place or possibly poisoned.

While CA glues give the best of all worlds when they have been properly selected for the tasks, and though they are indisputably handy in fragging it is important to remember that glues in general are important. Attaching corals together or to any surface can be accomplished using most underwater adhesives, and while you could not use any it would result in a rather plain atmosphere. This is why using an adhesive during mounting is so important to the look of your reef tank.

Is it Safe?

Through the power of nature, these fragments will grow into new colonies. Coral achieves this by creating clones of themselves, clones they are capable of generating since they are embryos. This means it’s entirely natural to frag your coral.

Keep these tips and this knowledge in mind when you consider using CA glue for your fragging, after all experimenting is good to get you to try the practice in the first place, but too much can lead to disaster.

Difference Between Cyanoacrylate and Super Glue

The Difference Between Cyanoacrylate and Super Glue

Adhesives play a crucial role in the life of human beings. There are many types of suitable adhesives depending on various application needs. Generally, adhesives will be weak, mild or strong relative to the composition of the surface and the stress that the surface or joint might experience. For example, cyanoacrylate glues, also called CA glues or superglues, are extremely strong when used for stabilizing and reinforcing purposes and bonding rigid material. However, due to their brittle nature, they're weak-to-mild in strength when used to bond wood or joints. Superglues should not be applied to critical joints that are expected to experience significant shear stress. In such case, epoxies or polyurethane adhesives are more suitable.

Difference Between Super Glue and Cyanoacrylate

Super glue, cyanoacrylate, and CA glue are all different names that describe the same adhesive — Cyanoacrylate. Despite the fact that CA glue and cyanoacrylate glue are all names for cyanoacrylate adhesive, various user groups adopt different names for them. For instance, woodworkers, model-builders, serious hobbyists and skilled crafting professionals utilize terms like instant glue or CA glue.

Industrial users are accustomed to calling the glue by the technical name i.e. cyanoacrylate. On the other hand, users who purchase CA glue from drug stores or home improvement stores for occasional use at home call it super glue.

There are significant differences in adhesive performance among the various cyanoacrylate products. However, they all refer to the same kind of adhesive.

Super glues bond through reaction with moisture both on the material surfaces they are bonding to and moisture present in the air.

Benefits

Cyanoacrylate adhesives are associated with a number of benefits, these include:

Fast bonding – Super glues bond extremely fast compared to other types of glue. The speed of bonding is usually measured in seconds and this depends on the working materials and the environment. The bond tends to be faster in environments that are warmer and have higher humidity.

Bond strength - Cyanoacrylate adhesives form very strong rigid bonds. This varies slightly depending on environment, materials and grade but is still high.

Material compatibility – Super glues are quite versatile thus will work with several materials. This means that they easily bond with glass, ceramics, wood and common metals as well certain kinds of plastics and rubber.

Economy – CA glues are cost effective to use. This is because a single drop can cover an area of up to 25mm². This is why it is not advisable to use too much as it can decrease final bond strength.

Mixing – Super glues are never mixed with anything during the manufacturing process, this is beneficial because of not having to achieve precise combinations.

Tips

The following are some insightful tips on how to use CA glue:

Surface preparation – It is important to always work with rough surfaces because it significantly increases the available surface area — hence, increasing its surface energy. This allows the adhesive to easily bond with the material. In addition, the surface should be dry and very clean. Contaminants such as oil and dirt may affect the drying time and bonding strength of the glue.

Gloves – It is good practice to wear gloves when working with super glues because they bond to almost anything and the human skin is no exception.

Masking – When working with complex bonding surfaces, it is better to mask all the surfaces that surround the bonding area prior to applying the super glue. The use of masking tape minimizes the risk of problems occurring during application.

Bottle shape – It is important to work with the ideal bottle shape for super glues particularly if you are dealing with objects that require a precise fit. As a rule of thumb, small squeeze tubes apply in all cases.

Storage – If you want to properly store cyanoacrylate so that it lasts for a long time, try to clean up excess adhesive that is present at the opening. It is also good to squeeze out any excess air and to tightly close the lid. The main reason for ensuring that the lid is tight is to prevent contact between air and superglue that might result in an adhesive reaction.

Clean up – Cured super glue can be extracted from a surface using one of two means i.e. chemical removal or mechanical removal. Mechanical means is generally grinding it or scraping it off with a tool. On the other hand, chemical removal involves solvents that dissolve it via a chemical reaction to leave the surface completely clean.

Uses

Super glues are used in almost all industries including woodworking, woodturning, carpentry, RC car model building, FPV plane building and racing, archery, high pressure seal repair, electronics, and more.

Conclusion

It’s important to choose the right glue for the application. For infiltrating, stabilizing, and high gloss finishes, a thin viscosity CA will be ideal. Medium viscosity CA glues are ideal for general purpose repairs, fill cracks, and bonding close-fitting parts. And lastly, the thicker viscosity CAs are designed for bonding applications where users require longer drying times to carefully position mating parts for proper fit. Surfaces CA Glues Do Not Adhere Well To

Surfaces CA Glues Do Not Adhere Well To

One of the most adhesive used widely for gluing together surfaces is CA glue. It offers an instant bond to most surfaces that are friendly to the glue. The glue works best on wood and a few other surfaces. However, it does not glue well on every surface. Before using any cyanoacrylate super glue, you should make sure to run through the instructions very carefully. You do not want to waste time gluing on surfaces that will not adhere to the strong adhesive. Such as oily and dirty surfaces, liquids and gases, the following plastics do not adhere to the cyanoacrylate adhesive.

Delrin Plastics

Delrin plastics are acetal plastics that go by the brand name Delrin. It is a very tricky plastic to glue together with most adhesives, ca being one of them. When you apply ca on Delrin, it will not give it an instant bond. Instead, it forms a shell that is easy to remove.

Polypropylene Plastic

Polypropylene plastic, mainly used in automotive and textile industries, does not glue well with CA glue. This is mostly because of its semi-crystalline nature and its high chemical resistance.

Teflon Plastic

Teflon plastic has a number of property combinations that make it hard to glue together using some adhesives like CA glue. Teflon plastic is chemical resistance and does not weather easily.

High-Density Polyethylene Plastic

High-density polyethylene is a very common plastic used mainly in packaging. Plastic bottles, plastic lumber, resistant piping and geomembranes are some of the most common products made from polyethylene.

In addition to the above plastics, cyanoacrylate super glue does not adhere to the following surfaces:

  • Wet surfaces
  • Very smooth surfaces like glass
  • Porous surfaces which fail to build strong instant bonds with cyanoacrylate adhesive like wood
  • Metal surfaces
  • Oily surfaces will not bond with most glues unless you clean up the surfaces first.
  • Dirty surfaces might not get the instant bond with CA glue unless you use sandpaper on them to clean up the dirt first.

Wrapping it up

Ca adhesive is one of the strongest glues in the market and it is waterproof. It is best for repairs, filling up cracks or gouges, putting finer final additions on wood, eliminating pinholes, hardening cases and repairing chips among other things.

Make sure you get to know the surfaces you are gluing together to avoid any disappointments. Use only the right amount of glue because any excess will not do a good job. One drop of CA glue can cover a square inch of the surface you are gluing together.

Make sure you have gloves to avoid the glue from sticking on your fingers and if necessary, wear goggles to avoid eye irritation from the CA fumes. For bonding applications, the glue should sparingly be applied to one side of the surface. If you apply on both sides, it may not give the instant bonding you want.

Super Glue and Baking Soda Trick to Repair Plastic Popsicle Mold

We have another neat little trick on using Starbond glues. Maybe you've seen this method before but it works with all CA glues. I have here a popsicle mold. I've got it fresh from the store and there was a hole right where the mold have been ejected the plastic. No problem. I'm going to show you how to fix this using a baking soda and Starbond Superglue. Now, this would work with any super glue as I said but it would work best with the medium one due to its higher viscosity. If you use a thin super glue, you might actually have it penetrating into the mold before you could have a complete bonding reaction. What the baking soda does is to act as a catalyst instantly hardening the superglue into its plastic form upon contact. This plug holes, seals gaps, and it has high durability. So using the medium glue, apply just a tiny little dab right at the end of the holes. Add a baking soda and make the surface intact by slightly pressing on it using a cloth or any material you prefer. Wait for a few seconds to dry. Then all done! You may want to test your plastic for leakage by pouring water in it.
